Katya Gorker was born in Moscow, in the former Soviet Union, on the day Chairman Mao died. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1981, at the tail end of the cold war. As a Russian immigrant grappling with cultural identity, Katya has always been sensitive to language and the complexities of translating personal experiences. This sensitivity has informed both her artistic process and teaching practice.
She received her BFA in Filmmaking from the Massachusetts College of Art and her MFA from Temple University in 2012.
Her interests in film range from the immediacy of digital media’s impact on time and collective memory to personal ethnography and the shifting boundaries of cultural identity.

Foraging Audio Walk @ MEGAPOLIS AUDIO FESTIVAL
PHILADELPHIA ::: SEPTEMBER 16-17, 2017
In collaboration with Radio Producer Elana Gordon-we invite listeners on an audio walk, a sonic forage / meditation / experience that moves between urban and forest landscapes, immigrant kitchens, mycology labs and inner mind- scapes. As we walk and look, listen and see- we'll think about the practice of mushroom foraging among the Russian Diaspora and hear from John Cage and others on the art, philosophy and science of foraging. Join us as we discover that which has been waiting for us all along....
BEHEREWOW ~ an experiment in transmedia medititation
Projection and guided meditation will serve as a psychic fast-track to our collective consciousness: a deep awareness of self as past, present and future. We all carry this power within ourselves and we are inviting you into this process, to collectively inspire and create new futures together.
Will you join us? We are seeking 2-minute audio contributions, which will be part of an audio/video installation at the Time Camp 001 Exhibition in Philadelphia on September 30th.
Meditations will be paired with images and projected within an immersive mobile installation. We are seeking contributions from collaborators of all ages, and all parts of the globe. Audio recording must be in English.
Following the exhibit, the project will live online as an interactive media project.
